Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Elantra receives five-star scores in government crash tests for driver and front passenger protection in a front-end impact. It is also awarded four-star ratings, which are still very good, for both front- and rear-passenger protection in a side impact crash. The Elantra gets a four-star rollover rating, which means it has only a 10 percent chance of rollover in a single vehicle collision -- an excellent rating for the class.

In insurance industry testing, the Elantra doesn’t do as well. Although the 2010 model has not yet been tested, the 2009 model did receive the highest possible score of “Good” in front-end crash testing. It received the lower score of “Acceptable” in rear crash protection tests and an even worse score of “Marginal” in side impact testing. If you’re looking for better safety scores, consider the Nissan Versa, which was an insurance industry “Top Safety Pick” in 2009 and received top scores in almost every government crash test. The Versa’s excellent safety scores look even better when you notice that it has a starting price of around $4,000 less than the Elantra.

Standard safety features in the 2010 Elantra include six airbags, an Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and four-wheel disc brakes.  Top-of-the-line SE models also come with Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist.
