Infiniti FX - What the Auto Press Says
The 2010 Infiniti FX ranks 6 out of 16 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 17 published reviews and test drives of the Infiniti FX, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Infiniti FX boasts two powerful engine options, a stylish exterior and lots of hi-tech features. Its sporty handling and innovative safety features stand out, though its utility and ride quality suffer when compared to its rivals.
Even with its hefty base price, the FX is a good value within its class. Its sticker price is average for the class and the FX comes with a high level of standard features. Plus, it costs several thousand dollars less than the similar BMW X6 and achieves better fuel economy than nearly every other SUV in its class. The FX's most unique bragging right is its arsenal of hi-tech safety equipment, which includes a lane departure warning system. "If gizmos are your thing -- along with unique looks, solid handling and luxury surroundings -- then this Japanese luxury/sport crossover is tailormade for you," writes Road and Track. However, remember that most of the FX's gadgets come as part of multi-thousand-dollar options packages that can greatly inflate its price.
However, the FX isn't perfect. If you need a family SUV, its cramped rear seat and small cargo area may not fit the bill. For more family utility in an equally upscale package (but a more expensive price), consider two of the class leaders, the Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX. If you're looking for a more affordable alternative, check out the 2010 Cadillac SRX. It's one of most affordable models in the class, and this year's redesign has put it nearly on par with Infiniti and Lexus for refinement and quality.
For 2010, the FX remains virtually unchanged. If you're interested in it, it may make more sense to negotiate a great deal on a 2009 FX. The Infiniti FX35 features a V6 engine, while the FX50 boasts a V8. All-wheel drive is optional on the base model and standard on the FX50.
- "FX stands out from the pack for its combination of unique styling, sporty handling, and relative utility. It does, however, make some sacrifices in the ride and rear visibility departments." -- Consumer Guide
- "The FX puts the fun in functional." -- MSN
- "The Infiniti FX delivers a stylish crossover sport-utility with a healthy dose of amenities and solid performance at a decent price, and a palette of options to please almost anyone. If you prefer looking good and speed to practicality, comfort and fuel economy it's worth putting on your list." -- New Car Test Drive
- "While bowing to the inevitable and delivering a better ride and more luxury amenities, the second generation 2009 Infiniti FX also improves on its 'sport-ute that thinks it's a sports car' focus. Its aim of being the fastest, best handling, most techno-savvy CUV on the market is precise. And, for the moment at least, it's there." -- Motor Week
FX Performance - 8.7 (Very Good)
Thanks to last year's redesign, the 2010 FX's sporty handling and powerful engines stand out in its segment. Still, some test drivers find the ride almost too sporty and a bit harsh, especially with the FX50's optional Continuous Damping Control Sport mode. The more comfort-oriented FX35 is a better choice for most drivers. "The FX rides firmly, more like a sport sedan than a crossover, and the only SUV or crossovers that have the same bias to performance over softness are the Acura RDX, BMW X3, X5 and X6 sports, and anything with an AMG badge on it," says New Car Test Drive. FX Exterior - 7.8 (Good)
Though reviewers have varying opinions on the 2010 Infiniti FX's exterior, they all agree that it makes quite a fashion statement. A unique exterior feature on all models is Scratch Shield self-healing paint. "Styling of the FX is a tad overstated, but the overall look evokes motion and excitement," says the Kansas City Star. "The front fenders have an exaggerated bulge, but that doesn't matter once you slide behind the wheel." Read More
FX Interior - 8.4 (Very Good)
The FX's interior is both luxurious and stylish. It receives high praise for its long list of standard equipment and options that aren't available in most SUVs. However, if you want utility, look elsewhere. The FX comes with a cramped rear seat and relatively small cargo area. Read More
FX Safety - 10.0 (Excellent)
The 2010 Infiniti FX comes with more hi-tech safety systems than most cars on the market. Like most cars in its price range, it hasn't yet been crash-tested by the federal government. However, the insurance industry gives the 2010 model good scores in crash tests. Read More
FX Reliability - NA
The FX comes with a four-year/60,000-mile basic warranty. Read More
