Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

The Infiniti G37 has a fluid, stylish aesthetic that's well liked. It "resembles a Japanese calligrapher's brush-stroke gesture drawing come to life," says Motor Trend. "Its Cool Hand Luke sleek lines boast without bravado," for the Detroit News.

The brand-new G37 is a descendant of the G35, which before this year was available as a sedan or coupe and received its own exterior reworking for model year 2007. The G37, says Cars.com, "looks much like you'd expect for a two-door offshoot of the new G35." But "make no mistake," writes Car and Driver, "the G37 is more stylish than the sedan and thus satisfies most of the criteria for sedan-to-coupe conversion." The Los Angeles Times says, "On the outside, the G37 quietly evolves the previous design" of the G35 and, "The volumes, profile and fullback stance are virtually identical. The hood, fender flares and rocker panels are a little more sculpted than before. The biggest difference is the large lighting instruments -- headlights and taillights -- that envelop the cars' corners in Zircon sparkle."

"While upon first glance the new coupe bears a striking resemblance to the old one, longer examination reveals that designers burned plenty of midnight oil to recharge the car's lines," writes Motor Trend. AutoWeek says the G37's look is "unmistakably new, with rounder corners and swoopier lines" than those of the 2007 G35 coupe. The Auto Channel says it "offers a more refined experience," arguing the difference is "kind of like dating a 30-something compared to a 20-something."

Despite this air of refinement, some reviewers see a more assertive stance. Road and Track finds, "The exterior is now much more muscular-looking, thanks to the redesigned front grille and spoiler, the swept-back 'cat's-eye' look of the headlights and the swooping shape of the fenders." Automobile Magazine explains, "The new car's front end, which looks soft and Lexus-like in pictures, looks muscular and tough in person," and decides, "Overall, it's a subtle evolution of a great design."

Base and Journey models look largely identical, unless the Journey model is equipped with the Sport package that is standard on the Sport 6MT. The Sport package has unique front end, 19-inch alloy wheels and rocker panels that Edmunds describes as "aggressive-looking."
