Infiniti M Safety Review

Safety - 6.2 (Mediocre)

The 2008 Infiniti M comes with a hefty list of standard safety features and advanced safety system options. The 2008 Infiniti M has not been crash tested by the insurance industry, but the 2007 M performed well.

The 2007 M received a rating of "good," the best possible, in frontal-impact crash tests and in side-impact crash test results from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. Government crash tests have not been conducted on the M.

Accident Avoidance

The M comes equipped with a Traction Control System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist, four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System and Vehicle Dynamic Control. The Infiniti Intelligent All-Wheel Drive comes standard on the Infiniti M35x and M45x AWD trims.

Cars.com adds that the M has good visibility in all directions, "but wide B-pillars can impair the view a bit." Consumer Guide agrees, adding that the "Thick pillars partially obscure over-the-shoulder visibility."

Crash Protection

The M comes equipped with the Infiniti Advanced Air Bag System, which includes dual-stage front air bags with seat belt sensors. The M also includes front seat side-impact air bags, roof-mounted curtain air bags, front and rear head restraints, active front head restraints, adjustable front seat belts with pretensioners, LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) and an emergency inside trunk release.

Advanced Safety Systems

For 2008, the previous, Infiniti Lane Departure Warning System, which sounded a noise when the car would drift, has been upgraded and improved. The new Lane Departure Prevention system, according to Cars.com, "strategically applies individual antilock brakes to steer the car as necessary to keep it in its lane. The system uses a camera to recognize lane markings, and it calculates the vehicle's speed and its distance from them. Yes, it can be switched off."

Many reviewers like the RearView Monitor, an option in the Technology Package, and say it is an option worth getting. "The rear-facing color camera displays a picture of what's behind the car and guidelines that show where the rear of the car is headed," reports BusinessWeek. Motor Trend calls the RearView Monitor the "best backup camera in the business."
