Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government has never published crash test results for the Infiniti M. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested the mechanically-similar 2009 M, awarding the car the highest possible score, "Good," in both frontal- and side-impact tests.
The 2010 M comes with front, front-side and full-length head-curtain airbags. Rear seat airbags are not available, nor are knee-protecting airbags like those found on the Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Four-wheel antilock brakes with a brake assist system that adds power in panic stops are standard. Infiniti’s unique lane departure warning system goes a step further than what other manufacturers offer. While most rival systems alert the driver when the car is leaving its lane, Infiniti's can actually vary the speed of each wheel, making slight steering adjustments that help keep the car in its lane. An available backup camera shows the car's expected path as a bright line when it reverses – a feature that was unique to the M until this year, but is now found on the Buick LaCrosse as well.
Infiniti does not offer a telematics system that will automatically contact emergency services in the event of an accident – something that Cadillac, Lexus and BMW all include at this price point. A few reviewers cite visibility complaints.
