2007 Infiniti QX56 Interior

This interior review was written when the 2007 Infiniti QX56 was new.

The spacious interior of the 2007 Infiniti QX56 offers the comfort, luxury and cargo room expected of an SUV in its class, though a handful of reviewers complain of too much plastic in the cabin. Seven or eight passengers are treated to an interior that the Chicago Sun-Times describes as "subdued in almost a British luxury vehicle manner."

"The Infiniti QX56's cabin is bedecked in leather, thick carpeting and lustrous wood and aluminum accents," reports Edmunds. "Unfortunately, some hard plastic on the dash and doors takes away a bit of the upscale ambience." Motor Trend echoes the sentiment, writing, "While there's good use of wood, aluminum, and leather trim, for a first-class cabin costing $50-large, we see too much polymer."

The QX56 comes loaded with features. New Car Test Drive says, "The QX56 is as luxurious as the best of them. Its opulent cabin is lathered in leather and stuffed with technology." As expected with a large SUV, the QX56 is roomy, with 97.1 cubic feet of cargo room, and even more with the rear seats folded. Though this is a little less cargo space that some in-class competitors, About.com asserts, "The Infiniti QX56 is a whole lot of SUV," and guesses that only "if you've got a big family, or if you regularly transport a lot of people," would you "be one of the few who actually need all that capacity."

Seating

The QX45 offers different seating configurations that can sit seven or eight passengers. Standard seating holds seven, with two captain's chairs in the second row. An optional second-row bench seat increases passenger capacity by one. "There's seemingly enough room for an NBA starting team to stretch out," writes the Chicago Sun-Times, "although it helps to have NBA agility to climb in and out of this 78-inch-high vehicle." Even the seats themselves are spacious. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman reports, "The seats are huge, clearly fashioned for grandiose posteriors."

In the cockpit, "The dashboard and gauges are cleanly designed and easy to see," according to Forbes. New Car Test Drive finds, "The leather-trimmed front seats are almost plush, nicely bolstered with adjustable inboard armrests, and heated." About.com says the seats are "covered with the best leather this side of a baseball glove -- thick and rich, soft yet tough -- with just the right amount of padding and firm support."

In the second row, "I liked the heated, standard captain's chairs," writes a reviewer for the Detroit News, "with adjustable backs in the second row, which has lots of legroom." "The Infiniti's second row is particularly roomy," Auto Mall USA writes. "Indeed, the second row of the QX56 feels like sitting in first class. Expansive window glass adds to the feeling of spaciousness." About.com reports, "My test vehicle came with the bench, which was comfortable and easy to fold. There's actually room for three adults to sit, so if you need the most capacity, go for the bench seat."

In the back, contends the Detroit News, "The third row is cramped and, while the QX56 is quiet, I had trouble hearing front-seat passengers from that vantage point." About.coms deems the third row "adequate for two average-sized adults on a short jaunt."

Interior Features

"Technology abounds in vehicle systems, as well as convenience and entertainment options," writes CNET. "The center stack is anchored by an elegant analog clock and topped by a screen for the navigation system with a bunch of buttons in between," explains The Car Connection, "while the main instrumentation is electro-luminescent and easy to read." New Car Test Drive says the instruments are "very pretty" but cautions, "The always-lighted gauges can lead even an attentive driver into thinking the exterior lights are on when they are not."

The QX56 comes standard with a navigation system. About.com calls it a "good nav system" and explains, "The screen also connects with a rear-view camera, which activates automatically when the SUV is put into reverse." CNET reports, "The GPS system worked well both in the city and in rural Sonoma County. The usual Nissan/Infiniti navigation interface is relatively simple, but its stubby joystick/button can be difficult to press straight inward without moving it sideways and changing your selection." Also standard is a Bose audio system that MSN contends, "provided awesome sound." A rear-seat DVD entertainment system is optional.

Cargo

The QX56 certainly has space. Whether it's more or less space than its competitors offers appears to be a matter of interpretation. Edmunds writes, "As big as it is, the QX56 has less maximum cargo capacity than an Escalade or Lincoln Navigator, with just over 97 cubic feet of space." Car and Driver, however, points out, "With the rear rows folded, cargo room is 126 cubic feet, 17 more cubic feet than in the next-best Escalade and vastly more than in the unit-body SUVs." The Chicago Sun-Times doesn't parse the numbers and simply concludes, "The cargo area is big, and second- and third-row seats fold flat for additional cargo space."

Auto Mall USA provides a rundown of the cabin's small storage nooks: "Storage is plentiful, with fixed map pockets in the front and rear doors. The back of the driver's seat boasts a hinged magazine holder. Eight cup holders are provided. A modest amount of hidden storage space resides beneath the cargo floor behind the rear seat." AutoMedia.com sums it up, "Big trucks should have plenty of cargo capacity and this one does."
