Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The X-Type Sedan earns four out of five stars in federal government side-impact crash tests, but isn't rated in front-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, however, gives the comparable 2007 model a "good" (its highest rating) in front-impact crash tests. Still, it rates the X-Type as "marginal" (second to lowest rating) in side impact crash tests.

Accident Avoidance

To avoid accidents, the X-Type comes standard with all-wheel drive, Dynamic Stability Control and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with an Emergency Braking System. The Dynamic Stability Control system controls skidding by applying the brakes to individual wheels, which helps keep the X-Type from spinning out. The Emergency Braking System comes with Brake Assist, which aids stopping in emergency situations by continuing to apply brake pressure even if the driver lets up on the brakes.

Crash Protection

The X-Type also comes with a full complement of air bags. The driver and front passengers are protected with front, rear and side curtain air bags, side impact air bags, and knee air bags. Backseat passengers are protected by side-curtain air bags. In addition, the X-Type has a sophisticated occupant detection system which disables individual air bags if the vehicle senses a child or small passenger who might be hurt by air bag deployment.
