Jaguar XK - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Jaguar XK ranks 5 out of 9 Super Luxury Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 72 published reviews and test drives of the Jaguar XK, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Freshened for 2010, the Jaguar XK boasts a more aggressive design and performance than ever before. While it still might not be as sports-oriented as competitors, its sure-footed handling dynamics make it a great cruiser.

True to its Jaguar nameplate, the XK is a luxurious and masterfully engineered piece of machinery. It features a powerful, 385-horsepower V8 engine, an attractive exterior design that's been revised to look even more aggressive, and top-notch interior accommodations. Edmunds writes: "The power boost, additional standard equipment and more elegant-looking interior have made the XK fully competitive against already impressive players like the BMW 650i and M6, Mercedes-Benz SL550 and SL63 AMG, and Porsche's 911. It's also worth noting that the XK is less expensive than its principal competitors." Still, the XK is not perfect. Drawbacks include a cramped back seat and a somewhat confusing multimedia interface.

If you're in the market for a sporty cruiser that's luxurious too, test drive the 2010 BMW 6-Series -- which is also available in coupe and convertible body styles. For less refinement, but better sports performance and an even flashier exterior design, check out the Dodge Viper. While its Dodge nameplate doesn't carry the same clout as Jaguar, the Viper model instills fear and respect in many enthusiast circles. And though it was speculated that Dodge would nix the Viper in 2010, it lives.

The XK is available in two body styles, coupe and convertible. A high-performance XKR model is also available.

  • "An enticing blend of grown-up performance and sporty luxury makes XK a solid choice." -- Consumer Guide
  • "This is a handsome, elegant coupe that perfectly blends luxury and sportiness. The quintessentially British interior trappings are first-rate, and the ride is supple yet taut. Rear-seat space is a joke, but the rest of the XK is so nice that it can be forgiven." -- Car and Driver
  • "If you're looking to shake things up, the polished XK probably won't punch your buttons, and if you're looking for the most performance car for the money, I'd suggest sticking with the homegrown Corvette." -- Detroit News
  • "It is a beautifully sculpted sportscar that is as much a vehicle in which you can enjoy the ride, as it is one to show you have arrived." -- Left Lane News
  • "If you favor premium sports cars that match sensual design cues with outstanding creature comforts and you will happily trade a measure of brute force for more sophisticated ride and handling characteristics, the only choice you'll need to make is for a 2010 XK Coupe or an XK Convertible." -- Kelley Blue Book

XK Performance - 8.6 (Very Good)

Faster and more powerful than last year's model, the XK leaves test drivers impressed. "More sports car than supercar in either body style, the 2010 Jaguar XK embodies the Grand Touring ethos with a total package that's capable, comfortable and exceptionally rewarding, whether you're in high-profile cruise or hard-charge mode," writes Kelley Blue Book. The 2010 XK features a 385-horsepower V8 engine. Read More

XK Exterior - 8.6 (Very Good)

Critics like the XK's refreshed exterior design. "Few cars of any kind can match the exotic visual character of the 2010 Jaguar XK's sleekly contoured aluminum bodywork," writes Kelley Blue Book. "Classic long-nose/short-deck proportions impart a sporting flair to both the Coupe and Convertible that hearkens back to the marque's legendary E-Type." The convertible XK features a power retractable soft top. Read More

XK Interior - 8.0 (Very Good)

Reviewers report that the XK's front seats are very comfortable. Its back seat, however, is an entirely different story. "The backseat is such only in name," says Cars.com. "There's no legroom at all unless the front occupants slide forward, and the seat cushions have oddly shaped contours." The XK's cabin is also characterized by elegant materials and a somewhat controversial multipurpose touchscreen system. Read More

XK Safety - NA

The XK has not yet been crash tested by the federal government or insurance industry. It is, however, packed with an impressive array of advanced safety features -- including front dual-stage chest airbags and seat-mounted side airbags. Read More

XK Reliability - 7.0 (Good)
