Reviewers say that the 2014 Jeep Cherokee stands out in its class with good off-road capability and a premium interior. Hi! I am Jim Sharifi, Senior Editor with U.S. News Best Cars. In this video we will take a closer look at the Jeep Cherokee's performance.
The all-new Jeep Cherokee comes with a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower. A 271 horsepower 3.2-liter V6 is available on upper trims, and a 9-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models.
The base front-wheel drive Cherokee gets an EPA estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. That's respectable for the class, but compact SUVs like the Chevrolet Equinox use a bit less fuel. Most test drivers say the Cherokee's standard 4-cylinder engine produces adequate power for daily driving conditions, though some note that it can be noisy.
Most prefer the more powerful and refined optional V6, which they agree provides better acceleration.
Some reviewers call the V6 downright fun, while others note that the transmission shifts smoothly and quickly in most situations. When it comes to handling, some critics say the Jeep Cherokee feels soft and lacks composure, while others state it feels confident in turns and has little body lean. A few critics note that the Cherokee rides a bit firmly, but most agree that it's comfortable overall. They say the Cherokee Trailhawk offers commendable performance off the pavement and 4-wheel drive models come with Jeep Selec-Terrain System, which features driver-selectable settings for normal conditions, as well as snow, sport, sand, mud and rock.
