The 2010 Jeep Commander is capable of going off-road, but it lacks the refinement of many competitors. Unless you really want a Jeep with minivan-like seating capacity, a different 2010 large SUV or a crossover SUV will likely serve you better.

Reviewers were not overly impressed with the 2010 Jeep Commander when it was new. While they appreciated its off-road capability, they were not smitten with its harsh ride once you left the trail and got back on the pavement. The Commander’s fuel economy and reliability are about average for the class, so while it may not be the most expensive large SUV to operate and maintain, it likely isn’t the least expensive either.
The Commander comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but two four-wheel drive systems are available. Buyers can select either a 3.7-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Reviewer opinion on the V6 wasn’t particularly favorable, but the V8 adds a lot of power without a major decrease in fuel economy. The rear-wheel drive V6 Commander gets 15/20 mpg city/highway, while the V8 only decreases fuel economy to 14/20 mpg. Opt for four-wheel drive and you’ll see slightly lower fuel economy averages. The Commander can seat up to seven when equipped with the available third row, and can hold up to 68.5 cubic feet of cargo, which is far less than most rivals. Maximum towing capacity is 7,400 pounds.
Reviewers did not think the Commander’s seats were comfortable, and they also weren’t impressed with the overall interior quality. However, they did find a wealth of standard and optional features. Standard equipment includes power locks, windows and mirrors, in addition to steering wheel-mounted audio controls. A fully-loaded Commander could include features like a sunroof with rear-mounted skylights, a power liftgate, a premium sound system with satellite radio, leather seats, navigation and Bluetooth.

If you’re looking for an affordable large SUV, you should also consider the 2010 GMC Yukon. The Yukon has more passenger and cargo space than the Commander, and reviewers liked the Yukon’s interior quality. The Yukon also offers good handling and performance, as well as good fuel economy for the class. The Yukon also has a higher reliability rating than the Commander.
Another model to consider is the 2010 Ford Expedition. Reviewers found the Expedition’s seats to be among the most comfortable in the class, even in the third row. The Expedition can’t match the Commander’s off-road prowess, but its added interior space will be appreciated by families. The Expedition is also available in a long-wheelbase EL variant, which offers more cargo room behind the third row.
