Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 Jeep Commander bares a striking resemblance to the original, and now discontinued, Jeep Cherokee, but in a class that tends toward sleeker looks, that translates to a relatively low exterior ranking.

The Jeep Commander is a four-door, large SUV with a rear hatch. MSN says "The Commander has a Jeep retro look with items found on the 1946 Jeep wagon. They include a slotted grille, round headlights, trapezoidal wheel openings and boxy shape with a steep windshield and rear end."

The Washington Times suggests, "Those familiar with the Jeep lineup, especially its recent styling progression, will recognize the Commander's facade as consistent with the modern Jeep philosophy, but departing noticeably in key areas." They contend that the 2005 Grand Cherokee underwent a design evolution that included an increase in the body-to-glass ratio, new design of the hood/front clip contour, a "chiseling" method applied to the rear hatch/taillights and a flaring of the fenders.

One criticism of the Commander is that the updated look is just too confusing for SUV enthusiasts. Autofieldguide.com says, "What the hell does this vehicle want to be, modern or rugged? I have no idea. The confusion continues with the faux Alan wrench bolts that flank the trapezoidal wheel wells."
