Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Jeep Liberty does very well in federal government crash tests. The 2008 model features new standard safety equipment, including stability control and side air bags.
The Liberty gets a top score of five stars for driver safety and passenger safety in frontal crash tests. In side crashes, the Liberty also earned five stars for front- and rear-seat protection. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gives the Liberty a top rating of "Good" in frontal offset tests, but a much lower score of "Marginal" for side impact tests. The Liberty also gets a rating of "Poor," the lowest possible, for rear crash protection.
Accident Avoidance
New Car Test Drive says, "Safety features put the second-generation Liberty on par with the class benchmarks." These features include all-speed traction control, an electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, a tire pressure monitoring systemand hill start assist. The Limited 4WD also includes hill descent control.
Crash Protection
The Liberty comes with driver and passenger advanced multi-stage air bags. Side-curtain air bags, previously only offered as options, are also standard for 2008.
Reviewers appreciate the three-point seatbelt in the center rear seat, an unusual feature for most SUVs but a standard feature on the Liberty. They also praise the Enhanced Accident Response System, which unlocks doors and illuminates interior lights five seconds after the deployment of the front or side air bag. The system also shuts down the fuel pump immediately after air bag deployment.
