Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2010 Liberty receives top scores of five stars from the federal government for driver and passenger safety in front-end crashes as well as front- and rear-seat safety in side impact crash tests. However, it gets a three-star rollover score, which means the 4WD model has a 22 percent chance of rollover in a single vehicle crash and the 2WD model has a 25 percent chance. By contrast, many competing SUVs earn four star rollover ratings.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the 2010 model, but gave the 2009 model a top rating of "Good" in frontal offset tests. The Liberty received a much lower score of "Marginal" in side impact tests and an even worse score of "Poor" in rear crash protection tests.
Standard safety equipment includes advanced multistage front airbags, supplemental side curtain front and rear airbags, anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation, an Electronic Stability Program, Hill Start Assist and All Speed Traction Control. Four-wheel-drive models also come with Hill Descent Control. The only safety option, available on the Limited, is a ParkSense Rear Park Assist System, which uses sound waves to detect nearby obstacles in and near the rear path of the vehicle.
- "Safety features put the second-generation Liberty on par with the class benchmarks." -- New Car Test Drive
- "One thing I really missed in the Liberty was a backup camera; it comes with an optional parking assist system, which includes a sonar-based warning system with audio and visual alerts. For a smaller SUV, the Liberty is still tall. If one of my children were standing behind it, there's no way I could see them because the rear window is too high off the ground." -- Mother Proof
