Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Jeep Patriot does very well in federal government crash tests. It also comes with a substantial list of standard safety equipment.
The Patriot receives 4 out of 5 stars for driver safety and 5 stars for passenger safety in frontal crash tests. In side crash tests, it gets 5-star scores for both the front and rear seats. Both the 2WD and 4WD models get rollover ratings of 4 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet tested the Jeep Patriot.
Accident Avoidance
RockCrawler.com says, "Safety is on everyone's minds these days and the Patriot has many features more-often found on higher-priced vehicles." To prevent accidents, the Jeep Patriot comes standard with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, traction control and hydraulic Brake Assist. An Electronic Stability Program (ESP) improves traction on slippery and difficult surfaces. Drivers can choose full-on, partial or full-off ESP. This is paired with an Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) system to maintain directional stability. One of Edmunds' "Top 10 High-Tech Car Safety Technologies," ERM applies the brakes and modulates the throttle as needed if it senses a potential rollover.
For maximum visibility, the Limited model comes with fog lamps. Four-wheel-drive models come with additional safety features geared toward off-roading, including hill descent control and locking differentials.
Crash Protection
For optimum protection in a crash, the 2008 Patriot features a safety cage structure that includes front crumple zones, knee bolsters, side door guard beams and a high-strength steel crossbeam to help transfer side-impact energy from one side of the car to the other. All models also feature multistage driver and front-passenger air bags and supplemental side curtain air bags. Supplemental front seat side air bags, which offer additional protection for front outboard occupants, are available as an option on all models.
