Experts dislike the 2014 Jeep Patriot for its lack of standard features, but how does it perform out on the road? Hi! I am Jim Sharifi with US News Best Cars. In this video we will take a closer look at the Jeep Patriot's performance.
The 2014 Patriot comes standard with front-wheel drive, a 5-speed manual transmission and a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that delivers 158 horsepower. A 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that produces 172 horsepower and a new 6-speed automatic transmission are also available. A continuously variable transmission or CVT is an option which is paired with the Patriot's available 4-wheel-drive system.
The base engine is rated at an EPA estimated 23 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway which is about average for the class. Reviewers claim that the Patriot's engines are loud and underpowered. Test drivers say that the 4-wheel-drive system is fairly capable off-road, but that the Patriot doesn't excel under normal driving conditions.
They also note that the 6-speed automatic transmission makes the best use of the optional engine's power and is preferred over the CVT. On the road, test drivers concluded that the Jeep Patriot has unexceptional driving dynamics and disappointing handling. Some say the Patriot feel shaky over road imperfections and at highway speeds. They also comment that the steering is slow and vague.
