Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government gives two-door and Unlimited Wranglers top scores of five stars for driver and passenger safety in frontal crash tests. Side crash tests have not been conducted. A con is the two-door Wrangler's three-star rollover score, which means it has a 27 percent chance of rollover. Most compact SUVs, including Unlimited two-wheel-drive Wranglers, earn four stars in this test.
Another major safety flaw for the Wrangler is that side-impact air bags are just optional, while side curtain air bags aren't even offered. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2010 Wrangler a top score of "Good" in frontal offset tests, but a very low score of "Poor" for two-door models without the optional side air bags in side impact tests. Four-door models without the air bags fare somewhat better, receiving a score of "Marginal" in side impact tests. The Wrangler also fares only adequately in rear crash protection tests, with both two- and four-door models receiving a score of "Marginal."
Supplemental front seat-mounted aide air bags are available as a $490 option on the Sahara and Rubicon. Standard safety features on all models include anti-lock brakes, advanced multistage front air bags, Electronic Roll Mitigation, an Electronic Stability Program and Traction Control.
