Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government gives two-door and Unlimited Wranglers top scores of five stars for driver and passenger safety in frontal crash tests. Side crash tests have not been conducted. A con is the two-door Wrangler's three-star rollover score, which means it has a 27 percent chance of rollover. Most compact SUVs, including Unlimited two-wheel-drive Wranglers, earn four stars in this test.
Another major safety flaw for the Wrangler is that side-impact air bags are just optional, while side curtain air bags aren't even offered. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the new model, but gave the 2009 Wrangler a top score of "Good" in frontal offset tests, but a very low score of "Poor" for two-door models without the optional side air bags in side impact tests. Four-door models without the air bags fare somewhat better, receiving a score of "Marginal" in side impact tests. The Wrangler also fared only adequately in rear crash protection tests, receiving a score of "Marginal."
Supplemental front seat-mounted aide air bags are available as a $490 option on the Sahara and Rubicon. Standard safety features on all models include anti-lock brakes, advanced multistage front air bags, Electronic Roll Mitigation, an Electronic Stability Program and Traction Control.
