2008 Kia Amanti Review

This review was written when the 2008 Kia Amanti was new.

The Amanti delivers European luxury qualities with a small price tag, but fuel economy and resale value may disappoint. If you're in the market for a large car, you should also consider the Hyundai Azera or the Toyota Avalon.

The consensus among the automotive press is that he 2008 Kia Amanti's generous standard features and low sticker price make it a good value option within the large sedan class. The recently added V6 engine provides more power on the road than previous models, but buyers can still expect a soft, comfortable ride. Car and Driver, for one, appreciates the Amanti's efforts to keep up with competitors, saying the Amanti "takes on the Chrysler 300, the Ford Five Hundred, the Nissan Maxima, and Buick LaCrosse and Lucerne with more power, more style and more equipment."  However, the traditionally low resale value of Kia vehicles, combined with poor fuel efficiency and consistent reviewer complaints about poor handling, keeps the Amanti low in our rankings.   With gas prices reaching record levels in 2008, fuel efficiency considerations may keep the Amanti from ever being a reasonable alternative for many buyers.

The Amanti was completely redesigned for 2007, and passes into 2008 without any major changes.  If you're in the market for a large car, we find the 2008 Hyundai Azera a better value with its higher resale potential.

  • "While the…Kia Amanti may not seriously challenge the leaders in its near-luxury family sedan class, they'd certainly better take notice." -- Motor Week
  • "This often-overlooked large sedan combines luxury-level passenger accommodations with attractive pricing. Handling is sloppy, however, and the overly soft ride will be a deterrent to many shoppers. But for those who fondly recall the large American cars of the 1970s, this may be your car, even if it happens to come from Korea." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The interior fit and finish surpasses what similarly priced American brands offer, though General Motors and Ford are improving. The Amanti also offers more luxury than what is found in the interiors of a Toyota or Honda in this price range." -- Boston Globe
  • "The Kia Amanti is absolutely packed with standard features that the American, European and Japanese manufacturers simply can't offer at these bargain-basement prices." -- New Car Test Drive
  • "The new Amanti is a lot of car for the money."  -- Road and Track
  • "In short, the car is a very good value."  -- Washington Post
