Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2009 Kia Rio5 only receives moderate safety scores from the federal government and insurance industry, but impresses reviewers with its lengthy list of standard safety features.
Crash Tests
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2009 Kia Rio5 four stars for the driver's protection in front impact crashes, five stars for the front passenger's protection in front impact crashes, four stars for the driver's protection in side impact tests, and three stars for the rear passengers' protection in side crashes. The hatchback also earned a four-star rollover rating.
- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2009 Rio5 an "Acceptable" rating for the frontal offset tests, but only a "Poor" rating for side impact tests.
Crash Protection
The Rio5 has been a reviewer favorite for being one of the first subcompacts to offer six air bags standard on all its trims. In addition, the 2009 model has front and rear crumple zones and side impact door beams. Anti-lock brakes, heated outside mirrors and front fog lights are optional.
- "The list of what you do get is impressive ... considering the price. Side-impact and side-curtain airbags are standard, making the Rio5 one of the cheapest cars to come with the important safety gear on every model." -- U.S. News
- "Eliminating some power accessories -- charging extra for them -- is how Kia can afford to equip all Rios with front seat, side-impact air bags and head-curtain bags for front and back seats. That's deluxe safety gear in this class of car." -- USA Today
