Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The Sportage performs reasonably well in government and insurance industry crash tests. The Detroit News raves that "the Sportage's standard safety features give you the sense that Kia has set itself up as Korea's version of [the] uber-safety-conscious Volvo."
In frontal and side government crash tests, the 2008 Sportage earned five out of five stars. The two-wheel drive model has a three-star rollover rating, while the four-wheel drive model earned four out of five stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2008 Sportage received a less-stellar rating of "Acceptable" in side impact tests. Though the new model hasn't yet been tested in frontal crashes, the 2007 model got an "Acceptable" rating.
Accident Avoidance
The Sportage comes equipped with four-wheel disc brakes; four-wheel ABS brakes; Electronic Stability Control; a traction control system; and an optional tire pressure monitoring system that comes standard on the EX trim.
Crash Protection
Other standard safety features include a wide array of air bags, including dual front advanced air bags, dual front seat-mounted side air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, front seat-belt pretensioners and LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children).
