Safety - What the Auto Press Says
In federal government crash testing, the 2010 ES earns five out of five stars for protecting both driver and passenger in a frontal-impact crash. The ES earns five out of five stars for protecting the driver in a side-impact crash, and four out of five for protecting the rear seat passenger.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the 2010 ES, but gave the mechanically-similar 2009 model its top score, “Good,” in both front and side-impact crash tests.
Standard safety equipment on the 2010 ES includes ten airbags -- front, front-side, and full-length head-curtain airbags are standard, as they are on every Upscale Midsize Car. The ES, however, also features rear-seat side-airbags, and knee airbags for both the driver and front-seat passenger. No other sedan at this price point offers all of those as standard equipment.
Electronic Stability and Traction Control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, which provides added power in panic stops, are standard on every ES.
An optional Pre-Collision System uses sensors to detect collisions before they happen. When a possible collision is detected, the system primes the brakes (which lessens the collision speed), cinches seatbelts and primes the airbags to deploy.
One safety feature is all new for the 2010 model year -- Lexus Safety Connect, like GM’s OnStar system, can contact emergency services in the event of an accident, even if the people in the vehicle aren’t able to communicate. A one-year subscription is standard equipment on the ES.
