Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government has not yet crash-tested the 2009 GS. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, however, gave the car its highest score in both frontal- and side-impact crash tests. The institute tested the car with only standard equipment.
Standard on the 2009 GS are a class-leading eight airbags -- two front, two front-side, two full-length head-curtain, and two front knee-airbags to keep the knees of the driver and front passenger from impacting the dashboard in a collision. Rear-side airbags are available as an option, but they are not recommended for those who will be installing child safety seats in the car.
Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system combine traction and stability control as well as brake assist to help the vehicle recover from a skid. It is standard on the 460, but not available on the 350. The GS 350 does have both Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control as standard equipment. Brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution are standard as well.
For an additional fee, the 2009 Lexus GS model can include Lexus' Pre-Collision System. The Pre-Collision System has a front-mounted radar sensor that can detect an object ahead. If the computer determines an unavoidable front collision, the front seatbelts preemptively tighten and the Brake Assist increases brake force, all immediately after the driver steps on the brake pedal. The GS Pre-Collision System comes with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and is available for all GS trim levels.
