2008 Lexus IS Interior

This interior review was written when the 2008 Lexus IS was new.

With a refined interior, rich in electronics and subtle styling cues, the Lexus IS exudes quality craftsmanship. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman finds the cabin "classy" and "sleek," with an overall feel that is "more reminiscent of an easy chair than an airplane cockpit."

The 2008 Lexus IS can seat five adults, but has restricted rear legroom for taller passengers. CNET raves about its "excellent cabin technology," which includes a "crisp navigation screen" and a "top-notch audio system."

Car and Driver sums up the majority view, saying, "The immaculately trimmed interior with fastidious fit and finish won't disappoint luxury seekers."

Seating

The interior of the IS gets good reviews for its comfort. MSN finds comfort and passenger room to be "excellent" in the front seats. The front seating area is so nice U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman cites the "usual, delightful little Lexus surprises" like the armrest that glides effortlessly and a touch activated ashtray that "recedes with a flick of the fingertip."

Forbes says the IS has a "cocooned quiet feeling," which might because of a backseat that many reviews say is tight and cramped. MSN mentions the lack of rear space, saying the IS "skimped" on room for long-legged back passengers. In addition, headroom is limited, reports Consumer Guide.

Interior Features

The 2008 Lexus IS has full leather treatment and the choice of bird's eye maple wood or metallic dashboard and trim work.

The 250, in its base trim level, comes with standard moonroof, leather upholstery, power front seats, automatic dual-zone climate control and a premium audio system with six-disc CD changer. The Lexus IS 250 is also satellite-ready, and includes an audio input jack for digital music devices. Optional features include a navigation system, backup camera, Bluetooth communications system, and a Mark Levinson premium sound system with 14 speakers.

Stereo System

Reviews are positive about the optional Mark Levinson premium audio system, saying it adds high-quality sound to the IS cabin. The audio upgrade comes in the Navigation System/Mark Levinson Premium Audio System Package or as a standalone additional feature. Edmunds reports that this feature adds to the car's "high-end demeanor." Auto writers from the Los Angeles Times call the system, with 14-speaker 300-watt sound and DVD audio and video, "great, fantastic," and "wonderful." Automedia.com adds that with this upscale audio addition, "your home theater might end up gathering dust," as you "enjoy the tremendous sound," of DVD movies on the navigation screen.

Navigation System

The IS' navigation system is part of the Navigation System/Mark Levinson Premium Audio System Package or is available as an individual feature for additional cost. Auto writers praise the system for its simplicity and clear, crisp display, highly recommending this upgrade for prospective buyers. Consumer Guide says the screen is easy to read and the system is "easier to learn than most navigation systems." Edmunds says the latest "Gen-5 navigation system is the latest in digital mapping," displaying the roads and maps through a monitor capable of 32,000 colors. USA Today says, adding that "you won't read this here very often," that the 2007 Lexus IS offers "a good navigation system.Easy to use; big, bright, easy-to-follow display; quick to recalculate when you stray from the intended route." MarketWatch concludes that the navigation option for the 2008 Lexus IS "should be the model for others."
