2014 Lexus LS Review

Test drivers say the 2014 Lexus LS has a sedate ride quality, opulent interior and first-class seating accommodations, but isn't as powerful or fun to drive as its German counterparts. 

The LS 460 is powered by a V8 engine that auto writers say delivers sufficient power and gives it reasonable acceleration. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission that test drivers report shifts smoothly, but is occasionally in the wrong gear, which slows throttle response and acceleration. The LS is rated at up to an EPA-estimated 16/24 mpg city/highway, which is on par for the class. A hybrid version, the LS 600h L, has a larger V8 and two electric motors, but reviewers say the added weight of the hybrid components makes it slower than the non-hybrid LS 460. The LS hybrid is EPA-rated at 19/23 mpg, which is somewhat low compared to hybrid and diesel rivals. Test drivers say that the LS has an extremely comfortable ride, but note that shoppers looking for a luxury sedan with lively handling and precise steering probably won't be satisfied. They like the LS 460 F Sport's strong Brembo brakes and say its firmer suspension sharpens handling somewhat, but not to the level of its German rivals' poised handling.

According to reviewers, the Lexus LS 460's cabin is extremely well-appointed, with liberal use of soft-touch leather and handsome wood trim. Reviewers praise its comfortable and supportive front seats and rave about the spacious rear accommodations, especially in long-wheelbase models, which they say offer generous legroom. The LS has a generously sized trunk for the class. Some critics aren't wild about Lexus' Remote Touch system that controls most stereo and navigation functions, saying its curser is overly sensitive and imprecise and that the system can be distracting while driving. Standard features include a 10-speaker stereo system, navigation, Remote Touch, a 12.3-inch display screen, a rearview camera and Bluetooth. Blind spot monitoring, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson stereo system, a rear-seat entertainment system, massaging, heated and power-adjustable rear seats and four-zone automatic climate control are optional.

The 2014 Lexus LS seats up to five and comes with standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. There are regular- and long-wheelbase variants available, the latter of which offers increased rear-seat legroom. There are three essential trims, including the base LS 460 (and long-wheel base variant) and LS 460 F Sport, which have a 4.6-liter V8 and eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as the hybrid LS 600h L, which has a 5.0-liter V8 and continuously variable transmission.
