Lexus RX 450h - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Lexus RX 450h ranks 3 out of 16 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 24 published reviews and test drives of the Lexus RX 450h, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

For 2010, Lexus has redesigned its RX Hybrid crossover and changed its moniker from 400h to 450h, marking the SUV's second generation. The new model doesn't represent a radical change. Instead, Lexus has refined one of its best-selling vehicles by adding a few needed elements to keep it fresh and modern.

In Truck Trend's comparison test with the Volkswagen Touareg TDI, Mercedes ML320 Blutec and BMW X5 35d, the RX Hybrid placed second. Truck Trend concludes that the RX is "[p]erfect for the iPhone-loving city-stomper, but if long/heavy hauls and more than light off-roading figure into the equation, you'll find it too compromised."

The RX Hybrid's electrically assisted V6 engine has grown from 3.3 to 3.5 liters. Along with more compact batteries and motors, the new engine gives the 450h even better fuel economy than before. It also gets a new rear suspension and an interior that's been redesigned and made more spacious. Overall, it's an even more refined car than before, and one that might be worth it for Lexus loyalists. Because of its good value, the RX Hybrid is our 2010 Best Hybrid SUV for the Money. Still, several reviewers question the 450h's high price tag. It is expected to cost about $7,000 more than its RX 350 counterpart, which is reviewed separately.

Test drivers love the Lexus RX 450h's performance, which is impressive for a hybrid. Improvements for 2010 have made the transition from gasoline to electric power even more seamless. However, a few test drivers complain about slow acceleration and poor handling due to the hybrid's excessive weight. "OK, so the RX 450h has a pretty long payoff period and is slower than its predecessor," says Edmunds. "But don't go thinking Lexus has lost the plot with the RX 450h. Auto writers are pleased with the Lexus RX 450h's exterior styling, which hasn't changed too much. "There were some serious lines added to the new RX models, as well as a sports suspension package, to help Lexus try to lure more male buyers," says the Detroit News. RX-Hybrid Interior - 8.7 (Very Good)

The Lexus RX 450h's interior is luxurious, comfortable and more spacious than ever before. "Thankfully, the Lexus' interior is what you'd expect from this marque, with its trademark wooden steering wheel and leather everywhere," says Four Wheeler. "Shucks, this thing's nicer inside than my house!" The RX Hybrid also boasts an impressive number of hi-tech features, including the first-ever Remote Touch controller, a computer mouse-like device that comes with the optional navigation system.
