Lexus RX Hybrid Review

The 2014 Lexus RX Hybrid ranks 2 out of 18 Luxury Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Lexus RX Hybrid, as well as reliability and safety data.

The 2014 Lexus RX Hybrid is ranked:

Although it isn’t the most athletic SUV in the class, test drivers say the 2014 Lexus RX 450h offers great fuel economy and an upscale, roomy interior. Because it has the best combination of positive reviews, price and long-term ownership costs in its class, we named the 2014 Lexus RX Hybrid the Best Hybrid SUV for the Money. The RX Hybrid is also our 2014 Best Hybrid SUV for Families.

With its V6 engine and electric motors, reviewers say that the 2014 Lexus RX Hybrid has sufficient power for daily driving, though a few mention that it can be a little sluggish off the line. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard in all models, and some reviewers note that it makes good use of the engine’s power. The RX 450h earns fuel economy estimates of 32/28 mpg city/highway, which is excellent among hybrid SUVs. According to most reviewers, the Lexus RX 450h isn't particularly nimble, but it still feels fairly stable and composed through turns.

Automotive journalists like the RX Hybrid's cabin, which has excellent build quality, upscale appointments and high-quality materials. Reviewers think the Lexus RX 450h's seats are comfortable and say its back seats offer plenty of legroom. However, reviewers are displeased with the controller that comes with the optional infotainment and navigation system, which they think is distracting and complicated. Standard features on the RX 450h include a nine-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, push-button start and dual-zone automatic climate control. Optional features include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, HD Radio, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, a pre-collision warning and pre-braking system, a rear-seat CD/DVD entertainment system and blind spot monitoring.

  • "The 2014 Lexus RX 450h delivers on its promise of impressive fuel economy, utility and luxury. For a hybrid luxury crossover SUV, it's a great choice." -- Edmunds
  • "RX has a winning blend of luxurious comfort, practicality, and build quality while adding welcome high-tech features. … This Lexus was one of the first premium-midsize crossover SUVs, and it remains one of the best. If you're considering such a vehicle, put this one near the top of your list." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

Other SUVs to Consider

If you need three rows of seats, consider the Acura MDX, which earns reviewer praise for its refined handling and powerful, quick V6 engine. While it isn’t a hybrid, the MDX has good fuel economy for a midsize SUV, and it comes with numerous standard features.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with a new diesel engine that helps it get great fuel economy for a midsize SUV, and reviewers say that the Grand Cherokee offers great off-road prowess and a roomy back seat. Additionally, many love the Grand Cherokee’s lavish interior, particularly on higher trims.
