Lexus SC - What the Auto Press Says

Reviewers find that the 2009 Lexus SC is a luxurious grand tourer, but not much of a sports car.

The SC made its debut in 2002 and hasn't changed much since. While its elegant interior, sleek power-retractable hardtop and impressive list of convenience features once made it a compelling choice, competitors now offer similar features -- plus real sports performance. Edmunds explains, "The 2009 Lexus SC 430 is a comfortable and luxurious convertible that excels at leisurely weekend drives but lacks the sporting athleticism of the competition."

If you're in the market for a super luxury sports car with a convertible hardtop and all-around better sports performance, check out the Cadillac XLR and Mercedes-Benz SL. Both are significantly more expensive than the SC, but are also more powerful and capable machines. For a bit less then you'd spend on the SC, you could also opt for the mighty Porsche Boxster.

  • "SC 430 is a posh, pleasant, semi-sport convertible with the extra security and convenience of a power metal roof, plus Lexus' highly rated customer service, workmanship, and reliability.  ...  It isn't cheap, but some rivals with similar power and features cost even more." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Still one of the most evocatively styled vehicles in the entire Lexus portfolio, this V-8-powered, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 boasts the ability to transform itself from coupe to convertible at the push of a button." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Its hardtop convertible design makes it seem like more of a sports car than it really is. It actually is more of a touring vehicle although not made for family usage. The rear seats are very cramped and cargo space is minimal." -- Carseek

SC Performance - 6.8 (Mediocre)

Test drivers report that the SC makes a good choice for a grand tourer. "In addition to its overt luxury cues, the 2009 Lexus SC 430 is an extremely capable traveling companion, whether you prefer leisurely freeway cruising or a brisk run down a twisty two-lane," writes Kelley Blue Book. Still, it's no match for sportier competitors like the Mercedes-Benz SL and Cadillac XLR. Read More

SC Exterior - 7.2 (Good)

Critics are split over whether the SC looks good or not. Kelley Blue Book explains, "The SC 430's exterior styling won't please everyone..." Most, however, concede that its power-retractable hardtop is cool. Read More

SC Interior - 6.9 (Mediocre)

Auto writers are impressed by the SC's luxurious interior. "As with any Lexus, the SC 430's interior features top-notch materials and an attractive design," writes Edmunds. "Occupants are enveloped in supple leather and rich wood trim." Still, many take issue with its limited passenger room and lack of cargo space. Read More

SC Safety - NA

Though the '09 SC has yet to be crash tested by the federal government or insurance industry, it features a long list of standard safety equipment -- including front, side and knee airbags for front passengers. Read More
