Acceleration and Power
Auto critics love the '09 Exige's powerful mid-mounted, supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. While the S generates 218-horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 156 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm, the S 240 produces 240-horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 170 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. Both are equipped with a six-speed close ration manual transmission. Lotus reports at 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 4.1 seconds with the S and 4.0 seconds with the S 240. The Exige can reach a top speed of 150 mph.
Though the EPA has yet to rate the '09 Exige's fuel efficiency, its figures should closely resemble that of the previous model year. In 2008, it achieved a city/highway fuel economy of 20/26 mpg -- which is really surprising given what this machine can do.

Handling and Braking
Test drivers find the '09 Exige handles marvelously, though they also note that not all drivers will find its stiff suspension comfortable for everyday use. In addition to its standard performance technology, Lotus offers options to satisfy the most aggressive of drivers -- including a Limited slip Differential.
