Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

The exterior of the 2009 Maybach 57 is clearly derived from the previous-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class. That fact causes some reviewers to say the 57 looks dated -- even the S-Class has been updated since this design first appeared. However, the big car has presence, with its signature two-tone color scheme and heavy use of chrome accents, that helps differentiate the Maybach from its more pedestrian S-Class roots.

  • "From outward appearances, the Maybach seems more like a stretched and customized Mercedes than a purpose-built luxury icon like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and for this reason, the Maybach seems just a bit less special." -- Edmunds
  • "For the special [Zeppelin] model, Maybach uses a two-tone paint scheme with the majority of the car painted in taiga black and a rocky mountains light brown strip running the along the car's shoulder line. Of course, customers can request any paint combination they can possibly think of. The 20-inch chrome shadow painted rims and streamlined mirrors are new." -- AutoWeek
  • "We don't find the Maybach attractive, but we think that matters less than whether the car has presence." -- Car and Driver
