2014 Mazda CX-5 Review

The 2014 Mazda CX-5 earns great fuel economy for the class and reviewers say its agile handling makes it a blast to drive. For having the best combination of factors that appeal to families, we named the CX-5 our 2014 Best Compact SUV for Families.

According to test drivers, the Mazda CX-5's base four-cylinder engine has decent power for getting around town, but is underpowered when climbing hills. Reviewers say the optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine offers much more power. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is available. Auto writers say both transmissions deliver smooth shifts. Both drivetrains get excellent fuel economy for the class at 26/32 mpg city/highway for the base automatic front-wheel drive and 24/30 mpg for the automatic all-wheel drive with the more powerful engine. Nimble handling and responsive steering make the CX-5 a joy to drive, reviewers say.

Automotive journalists report that the 2014 CX-5's simple interior styling may not appeal to some. However, they say the cabin is composed of top-notch materials and soft-touch panels. Controls are easily accessible and simple to use, auto writers report. Standard features on the Mazda CX-5 include steering wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, keyless entry a USB port, an auxiliary port and push-button start, which is rare for a compact SUV. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with voice control is optional, as is a color touch-screen display, a navigation system, a backup camera, a Bose stereo, satellite radio, Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system and a blind spot monitoring system. Many test drivers comment that the optional navigation system can be confusing. Cargo space is average for the class, and test drivers say that there’s plenty of passenger space in both rows.
