Used Car: 2014 Mazda CX-5 Review

Review Last Updated: 7/20/15

The 2014 Mazda CX-5 gets excellent fuel economy, and automotive journalists agreed that it has nimble handling for an SUV, which makes it very fun to drive.

Test drivers said the 2014 CX-5's base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine feels sufficiently powerful in the city but loses steam on uphill climbs. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which was new in 2014, is much stronger, they said. The base 2014 CX-5 with an automatic transmission gets an EPA-estimated 26/32 mpg city/highway, which is very good for the class. The CX-5 with the 2.5-liter engine has nearly identical fuel economy estimates. The CX-5 comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are available. Critics said that both transmissions shift smoothly. Test drivers wrote that the CX-5 has crisp handling that's bolstered by strong brakes and responsive steering. Some also noted that the CX-5 has a firm ride for the class.

The simple interior design of the 2014 Mazda CX-5 may not appeal to everyone, test drivers said, but it features high-quality materials that are soft to the touch. Critics said that the CX-5's controls are accessible and easy to use, and they found plenty of passenger space in both rows of seats. Cargo space is typical for the class. Standard features include a USB port, an auxiliary audio port and push-button start. Available features include Bluetooth, a color touch screen, a rearview camera, a Bose stereo, satellite radio, blind spot monitoring, navigation and Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system, which can automatically apply the brakes at low speeds if an obstacle is detected. Many auto writers noted that the CX-5's navigation system can be confusing.

We named the CX-5 our 2014 Best Compact SUV for Families when it was new.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2014 Subaru Forester has more cargo space than the CX-5 and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Reviewers were pleased with the amount of power provided by the Forester's base engine and with the size of its back seat.

Like the CX-5, the 2014 Ford Escape has sporty handling and strong available engines, according to critics. Test drivers appreciated the Escape's spacious rear seat and upscale cabin materials.
