Used Car: 2013 Mazda CX-9 Review

Review Last Updated: 9/30/14

Test drivers agreed that the 2013 Mazda CX-9 is one of the most fun-to-drive SUVs in the class and offers lots of cargo space, but critics said its third row isn't especially spacious.

With its standard V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, reviewers agreed that the 2013 Mazda CX-9 has plenty of power in all driving situations. At an EPA-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway, its fuel economy is at the low end among comparable three-row SUVs. According to auto journalists, the CX-9 stands out as one of the most athletic SUVs in the class, with ample grip, athletic handling and communicative steering. Most also said it rides comfortably and has strong brakes.

In general, reviewers said that the 2013 Mazda CX-9's cabin is attractive, though some noted that quite a few surfaces are built with hard, somewhat cheap plastics. The CX-9 seats up to seven in three rows, and critics agreed that the third row does not offer much leg- or headroom. With the rear seats folded, the CX-9 holds up to 100.7 cubic feet of cargo, which is quite good for the class and only bested by a few rivals. Bluetooth and a USB port are standard. Available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 10- or 11-speaker Bose stereo system, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring and navigation. Some critics mentioned that the multi-function display on the center stack is somewhat hard to read because of the small size of the screen.

Other SUVs to Consider

According to test drivers, the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse has a spacious, adult-friendly third row, and it has more cargo space than the CX-9. Additionally, they said the Traverse is easy to drive despite its large size, and it was named our 2013 Best 3-Row SUV for Families when it was new.

Auto journalists said the 2013 Dodge Durango has a high-quality interior and nimble handling for the class. It is also available with one of the few V8s in the class, which they said gives the Durango swift acceleration.
