The 2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns praise from professional car reviewers for its sheer driving pleasure and low base price. I am Jim Sharifi, Senior Editor with US News Best Cars. Does this mean you should head down to your local Mazda dealer? Let's find out.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a rear-wheel drive, 2-seat convertible that is largely unchanged for 2014. The base model achieves an EPA estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 on the highway which is pretty good for the class. Three trim levels are offered with prices starting at about $24,000. The Miata comes standard with a 4-cylinder engine that generates 167 horsepower and a 5-speed manual transmission. Upper trim levels get a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic is available on all trims. Test drivers love the 6-speed manual for its short, precise shifts and report that the Miata is a pure joy to drive, saying it offers razor-sharp handling and quick precise steering. Reviewers say the Miata's cabin has a functional layout with clear gauges and straightforward controls. They note the Miata can feel a bit cramped, adding that it's heavily bolstered seats are supportive but aren't very comfortable.
Standard features include a 6-speaker CD audio system and an auxiliary input jack. Options include automatic climate control and a Power Retractable Hard Top.
