Used Car: 2009 Mazda Mazda5 Review

Review Last Updated: 5/14/15

The 2009 Mazda5 combines the utility of a minivan with Mazda’s trademark sportiness and comes with excellent safety scores. When it was new, reviewers praised the Mazda5’s car-like handling, but noted that it was less spacious than other minivans.

With seating for six and car-like handling, reviewers placed the 2009 Mazda5 somewhere between a small minivan and a wagon. That’s an appealing combination compared with bulkier minivans, but reviewers felt that the Mazda5’s engine was too underpowered for the vehicle’s size. Reviewers also found that its interior quality could be improved, but overall, they said the Mazda5 was an excellent choice for small families. The Mazda5 also gets better fuel economy than most minivans.

Although the Mazda5 could use more power, reviewers liked its handling and braking. Compared with larger minivans, limited cargo and interior space is the Mazda5’s main drawback. However, the Mazda5’s compact dimensions make it easy to park in tight spaces and coast through traffic. Small families will be comfortable in the Mazda5, but larger families may need to find a full-size minivan.

When it was new, reviewers criticized the close quarters, saying that the third row was only suitable for small children, even with sliding second-row seats. The Mazda5 comes with second-row captain’s chairs and a third-row 50/50-split bench. Notable standard features include cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, automatic climate control, a six-speaker stereo with CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. Optional features when it was new include satellite radio, a sunroof, Bluetooth and a touch-screen navigation system.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Toyota Sienna is a good alternative to the Mazda5 when considering power, interior comfort and cargo space. If the Mazda5’s compact stature can’t accommodate your family’s needs, reviewers found that the Sienna had a refined interior with seating for up to eight. Thanks to all its positive attributes, the Sienna won our 2009 Best Minivan for the Money award.

If you’re looking for a full-size minivan that comes with more standard features, look no further than the 2009 Kia Sedona. In addition to more passenger and cargo space, the Sedona also earns slightly better safety ratings.
