Reliability

Mazda covers all of its vehicles with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The RX-8 also comes with a three-year/36,000-mile, 24/7 roadside assistance plan. Overall, the RX-8's warranty plans are competitive with those of class rivals. Only the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Mitsubishi Eclipse offer longer plans -- which provide five years or 60,000 miles of basic coverage and 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage.

In the past, owners encountered reliability issues with the RX-8's rotary engine. However, Mazda's new rotary engine extension warranty attempts to remedy the issue.

  • "Customers will be delighted to find an extension to Mazda's warranty, now covering the rotary engine for a full eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The balance of the powertrain remains warrantied for five years or 60,000 miles, and the basic warranty remains three years or 36,000 miles. And Mazda is extending this eight year/100,000 mile warranty retroactively to all RX-8s built between 2004 and 2008..." -- Car and Driver
  • "Reliability for the Mazda RX-8 is worse than average, according to Consumer Reports. Serious problems with the rotary engine are well-documented, and it is expected that Mazda will issue a recall of 2004, 2005 and some 2006 engines. Recalls already exist for engine cooling, suspension, transmission and airbag equipment on 2004 and 2005 models." -- Forbes
