Mercedes-Benz E-Class Safety Review
Safety - 9.5 (Excellent)
The 2008 E-Class sedan scores well in government crash tests, and according to Car and Driver, comes with an array of "comprehensive safety technologies."
Reviewers unanimously agree that the E Class is fitted with an abundance of safety features, including cutting edge safety technology. Mercedes PRE-SAFE® gathered the most praise from reviewers as an impressive safety system. Automobile.com says that "Benz is also aiming to make the E the safest vehicle in its class with new technologies to help the driver and drivers of other vehicles avoid accidents." Cars.com concludes that the E-Class "comes with so much safety technology, it becomes the motorized version of a security blanket."
Accident Avoidance
Reviewers agree that the 2008 E Class PRE-SAFE® system is sophisticated and reliable. The Mercedes Benz PRE-SAFE® system, available on the E-Class sedan, helps prepare for a possible collision before it occurs. Cars.com calls this system "anticipatory technology" that relies on a series of computers and sensors to predict an imminent crash and adjust front seat belts, airbags and close the sunroof if needed. Reviewers continue to say that the PRE-SAFE® system is "arguably the most advanced collision-mitigation system on the market."
Crash Protection
In government crash tests, the 2008 E Class earned four out of five stars for driver protection in front impact crashes, and four out of five stars for front passenger protection. In side impact crashes, the E Class earned five stars for front seat occupant protection and five stars for backseat occupant protection.
All 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans are equipped with an Integrated Restraint System where driver and front passengers are provided with an air bag, side-impact air bag, and three-point seat belt with Emergency Tensioning Device (ETD) and an adaptive belt force limiter. E-Class sedans also come with window curtain air bags, adaptive dual-stage front air bags for the passenger, an Occupant Classification System (OCS) which adjust the front passenger's air bag on or off based on weight, Universal LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) and active front head restraints.
