Mercedes-Benz E-Class - What the Auto Press Says
The Mercedes Benz E-Class is one of the finest cars in a class filled with exceptional cars. It's spacious and luxurious, but offers exceptional performance and taut handling that disguises its huge size. It's also one of the costliest cars in a class filled with expensive cars. The 2010 version, improved in many ways, will carry a lower MSRP.
The 2009 E-Class is an exceptional car. Its design is somehow both modern and timeless -- this is the clearest example of the stately, classic Mercedes character on the road today. It comes with a selection of engines, every one of which is quite powerful. Inside, it combines old-world luxury with modern technology in an elegant cabin. The E-Class is a sharp performer, but those looking for sport sedan tuning above all else might want to consider the BMW 5-Series as well.
New Car Test Drive says the E-Class name "describes a full line of big, roomy sedans that are solid, safe, practical, comfortable, luxurious and fast ... it expresses what most people think of when they think of Mercedes: status in elegant, understated fashion.".
It's among the most expensive in a very expensive class, and it can be expensive to maintain. The Lexus LS may prove a more predictable expense. A redesigned E-Class, due for teh 2010 model year, will actually carry a lower base price than the 2009 car.
For 2009, Mercedes brings its diesel-powered E320 Bluetec to all 50 states. All versions of the E-Class now offer Bluetooth connectivity and a new entertainment system. 4Matic All-Wheel Drive, an added-cost option in previous years, is now a no-cost option. Satellite radio is available for the first time.
- "In all honesty, you're not going to go wrong with any of these cars. As a sport-themed luxury sedan, the E-Class probably isn't the best choice. But for a luxury car that blends an intoxicating mix of luxury, brand cachet and performance, the E-Class is worth every penny." -- Edmunds
- "The E-Class is definitely a Mercedes; let's just get that out of the way now. However, it goes much deeper than that. It's also functional, comfortable and on the cutting edge of safety innovations." -- Mother Proof
- "Contemporary and sophisticated, rock solid and confident on the road, the E-Class brims with worthwhile features and Mercedes cachet. Prices are steep, but overall, these very appealing cars merit serious consideration." -- Consumer Guide
- "The E-Class sedans are big, roomy cars that are solid, safe, practical, comfortable, luxurious, and fast. The E-Class features some of the industry's most advanced safety technology, and it expresses what most people think of when they think of Mercedes: status in an elegant, understated fashion." -- New Car Test Drive
- "One of the best sport sedans money can buy." -- Forbes
E-Class Performance - 9.2 (Excellent)
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is available with a range of engine choices, all of them powerful. Its handling is impressive for the vehicle's heavy curb weight, but its not the most nimble car in its class. Forbes says, "Steering is sensitive and accurate, but never as engaging as the more-aggressive sport sedans, like the BMW 5 Series." Read More
E-Class Exterior - 8.7 (Very Good)
The E-Class carries the classic Mercedes design cues, with four round headlights, a squared-off rear quarters and the iconic hood ornament above the chrome grille. It could never be mistaken for anything else. Reviewers who associate the look with prestige love it, though some find it dated. Read More
E-Class Interior - 9.0 (Excellent)
The passenger cabin of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is elegant and comfortable. Reviewers caution that its electronics interface can be confusing, and its rear seat and trunk are fairly small for the large car class. But few have anything negative to say about the materials inside. Edmunds says the space "gives off an elegant, airy feel." Read More
E-Class Safety - 9.2 (Excellent)
The E-Class includes one of the most comprehensive safety packages offered anywhere, but still falls slightly short of the best in its class in both government and insurance industry crash tests. Read More
