Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The federal government has not yet tested the R-Class, but the insurance industry gives the 2010 model top scores of "Good" in front, side and rear crash protection tests. It also comes with plenty of sophisticated safety features, including a four-wheel Electronic Traction System, which monitors the speed of all four wheels to detect wheel slip and apply individual brakes as needed.
- "Still, these full-size SUV owners, used to a tall ride height and massive headroom, won't be straining to see the road ahead or traffic around, or feel confined when inside the R-Class. Its visibility is exemplary from the drivers seat or anywhere else." -- Automobile.com
- "Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front and rear side airbags. A sunroof is newly standard for 2009, along with Mercedes' PRE-SAFE safety system that senses an impending collision and tightens the seatbelts and moves the front passenger seat to a safer position." -- Consumer Guide
- "We highly recommend the optional park-assist system for maneuvering in tight quarters. That said, the R's steeply raked windshield affords excellent sight lines, and its substantial heft and autobahn breeding yield exemplary high-speed stability." -- Edmunds
- "For 2009, the R350 and diesel R320 continue on with some changes, most notably the addition of Mercedes' Pre-Safe automated collision-mitigation system. This safety system quickly and automatically prepares the vehicle for a crash by tightening the seatbelts and performing other actions. " -- Cars.com
