Used Car: 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Review

Review Last Updated: 7/25/12

The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer has a sporty exterior, but its interior quality, reliability and standard interior features are lacking.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer is ranked:

Reviewers said that the Lancer, available as a sedan or hatchback, is a good-looking car. Though the 2010 Lancer looks sporty, car reviewers said only higher trims actually have sporty performance. The base Lancer has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but reviewers said it feels sluggish. Averaging up to 22/31 mpg city/highway, this engine is the most fuel-efficient in the model line, though those ratings aren’t very good by class standards. For more power, check out the GTS trim and all-wheel drive Ralliart, but keep in mind their gas mileage is worse.

One of the Lancer’s greatest strengths is safety. It has very good safety scores and a lot of standard safety features, including electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution. The performance-oriented Ralliart has even more safety features. If you want a lot of interior features, the base Lancer doesn’t have a lot, but it does come with a four-speaker stereo, remote keyless entry and power windows and door locks. Higher trims and option packages add air conditioning, an auxiliary port, Bluetooth, navigation, an upgraded sound system and satellite radio.

A lot of test drivers called the Lancer’s interior cheap and said it was easy to see where Mitsubishi cut corners on quality, though they did say the back seat is comfortable. The sedan’s trunk also has good space for the class. If you need a lot of room for cargo, the hatchback has up to 46.6 cubic feet of space, which is good for the class.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer has sporty looks, but disappointing interior and performance plus a low reliability score suggest shopping the competition may be a smart choice.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2010 Subaru Impreza also has one of the most diverse model lines in the class. It’s available as a sedan or hatchback, and there are even high-performance WRX and WRX STI trims. One of the main reasons to choose the Impreza over the Lancer is that it has standard all-wheel drive. Like the Lancer, the Impreza has good safety scores and a strong list of standard safety features, but carries a below-average reliability score.

Available as a sedan and hatchback, the 2010 Mazda3 is a sporty-looking small car with performance that matches its exterior styling. Like the Lancer, it has several engine options, but even its base powertrain gets good reviews. When they tested it, car reviewers were impressed with the Mazda3’s quality interior and comfortable front seats, though like most cars in the class, they said the Mazda3’s rear seats were tight. The Mazda3 also receives high safety scores, but its reliability rating is below-average for the class.
