Used Car: 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Review

Review Last Updated: 8/14/14

Reviewers said the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer’s upper trims offer powerful engines and are tuned for the track, but they were disappointed with the base model’s lackluster handling and plain interior.

The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer is ranked:

The 2013 Lancer’s base four-cylinder engine delivers enough power for everyday use, reviewers said. However, many preferred Lancer SE and GT models for their extra power, while Lancer Ralliart and Evolution models earned praise for their responsive turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The base Lancer comes with front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission (CVT) is available, though a few critics wrote that it is noisy and saps power. Lancer SE, Ralliart and Evolution models come standard with all-wheel drive. The 2013 Lancer gets up to an EPA-estimated 26/34 mpg city/highway, which is typical for an affordable small car. Lancer GT, Ralliart and Evolution models earned praise for their agility and impressive body control, and test drivers noted that lower trims also offer handling that’s fairly composed. However, some disliked the vague steering found on lower trims, while others noted that the high-performance Lancer Evolution has a ride that’s particularly rough.

Reviewers were unimpressed with the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer's interior, saying its cheap materials and plain design aren't up to par with rival sedans’ cabins. Some also said it can be hard to find a comfortable driving position since the steering wheel doesn’t telescope. There’s plenty of legroom in the rear seats, test drivers noted. The Lancer is available in sedan and hatchback (Sportback) body styles, and the base Lancer’s trunk can hold 12.3 cubic feet of cargo, which is on the small side for a compact sedan. The 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer comes standard with a four-speaker CD audio system and power windows and door locks. Available features include air conditioning, a USB port, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a Rockford Fosgate sound system, a navigation system and a rearview camera.

Other Cars to Consider

The Dodge Dart was all-new in 2013 and reviewers said it has responsive steering and tackles corners with confidence. They were impressed with its stylish interior and infotainment system, which has a large touch-screen display and straightforward menus.

The 2013 Ford Focus hatchback has substantially more cargo space than the Lancer, and automotive critics loved the Focus’ athletic handling and sharp steering. The Focus gets better gas mileage than the Lancer, and it earned praise for its attractive, well-built interior.
