Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2009 Nissan Versa receives good scores in both government and insurance industry crash tests.

Crash Tests

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the Versa four out of five stars for both driver and front passenger in government frontal crash tests, and four stars in the front and rear seat protection in side crash tests. In addition, the Versa receives a four-star rollover rating.
  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Versa a "Good" rating -- the highest possible -- in frontal offset tests, side impact tests with standard front and rear head curtain air bags and standard front seat-mounted torso air bags. IIHS also gives Versa a good rating for set/head restraint geometry.

Safety Features

Reviewers admit the Versa has safety equipment typical for the small car segment, but that doesn't stop some from wishing it came with a standard anti-lock braking system. Some standard features include six air bags, a tire pressure monitoring system and an energy absorbing steering column.

  • "Anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution for surer emergency stops are optional. And an anti-skid control system isn't offered for either trim level." -- MSN
  • If you're worried about the safety angle, Nissan has you covered, as every Versa comes standard with front-seat-mounted side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags. -- Edmunds
