Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

Reviewers find the Xterra's exterior design fits well with its rugged image. The base X model doesn't get too many rugged elements, but trading up to the S gets you roof rack crossbars, splash guards, fog lights and a front tow hook for four-wheel-drive models.

  • "The Xterra's blocky Tonka-trucklike exterior is fitting for an SUV with such burly off-road capabilities. The large tires filling the flared fenders lend an air of athletic aggression and the integrated roof rail and gearbox advertise the Xterra's adventure-driven utility." -- Edmunds
  • "The Xterra's styling is an evolutionary design, mimicking the original's design heritage. The Xterra is defined by its standard tubular roof rack and stepped roofline." -- Cars.com
