Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Cayenne's redesigned exterior, praised as a " more sophisticated look" according to the Detroit News, merits a good score in the middle of its class. The review continues, "The changes are hardly noticeable at first glance, but somehow they make the Cayenne look cleaner and smarter without sacrificing its strong Porsche lines -- even with the optional 21-inch wheels on it."
The majority of reviewers like the Cayenne's style changes, which The Car Connection says not only look "cleaner and more athletic; Porsche confirms it translates to significantly improved aerodynamics." Specifically, the changes bring the Cayenne's drag coefficient down from 0.38 (V6 model) and 0.39 (V8 models) to 0.35 on all versions of the 2008 model. Visible changes include new headlights, front air intakes, redesigned exterior rearview mirrors, a larger rear decklid spoiler, new taillights, rear undercarriage diffuser, and redesigned exhaust tips.
Car and Driver notes that in the front, the "puffy, organic shapes of the original have been stretched into more organized, horizontal elements. The slim headlights represent the furthest departure yet from Porsche's trademark round 'eyes' since the 924/944." Motor Trend describes the new Cayenne's face as "broader and more sculpted," and Road and Track thinks the "more 911-esque, pushed-out-to-the-sides treatment of the headlights brings more muscle to the car, especially with the re-profiled wheel arches." While most reviewers appreciate the changes, the New York Times isn't sure what to think, quipping, "The aggressive new front-end styling makes it even more garish than it was; disturbingly compelling, in a leopard-skin jumpsuit kind of way."
The Cayenne comes standard with 17-inch wheels and 235/65R17 tires, while the Cayenne S and Turbo trims feature 18-inch wheels and 255/55ZR18 tires. The Car Connection notes that "the Cayenne's look is best accented with one of several optional wheel designs that range up to 21-inch." The high-end Turbo is distinguished by quad pipes and a vented rear spoiler above the backlight. To further personalize the Cayenne's exterior, buyers can add the optional Monochrome black exterior package or the Sportdesign package (though the latter restricts off-road capability).
