Auto writers say the Ram 1500 is a class leader with its exclusive diesel engine option, good fuel economy and car-like ride. Because it has the best combination of positive reviews, price and long-term ownership costs in its class, we named the 2014 Ram 1500 the Best Full Size Truck for the Money. 

The base 2014 Ram 1500 comes with a V6 engine that reviewers say makes reasonable power, but occasionally feels sluggish during highway passing maneuvers. New for 2014 is an optional turbodiesel V6, which reviewers say delivers smooth, refined power. A V8 engine is also optional, and test drivers say it is a great engine for anyone who plans to do lots of towing and hauling. An eight-speed automatic transmission is available with all engines, and reviewers say it shifts quickly and helps maximize fuel economy. With the V6 engine, the Ram 1500 earns up to an EPA-estimated 18/25 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Reviewers say the Ram 1500’s unique rear suspension gives it one of the most comfortable rides in the class. They also like its optional air suspension, which they say makes the Ram 1500's ride more comfortable and keeps the truck stable while towing. Test drivers like the Ram 1500's light and direct steering, which they say makes it easier to turn the truck at low speeds. Some reviewers caution that, like most large vehicles, the Ram 1500 can be tricky to maneuver in tight areas.

With plenty of high-end materials, solid construction and overall quietness, test drivers say the Ram 1500 has one of the best cabins in the class. They say its front seats are long-haul comfortable, and both Quad and Crew Cabs offer ample rear-seat space. A six-speaker stereo and a USB port are standard. Major options include Ram's voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system with Bluetooth and an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation and a seven- or 10-speaker stereo system. Reviewers say that the available voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system, which offers smartphone app integration, is one of the best in the business, with legible touch-screen buttons and redundant buttons and knobs for the stereo and climate systems.

Fully redesigned for 2014, reviewers say the GMC Sierra 1500 has a refined ride and handling and a high-quality, comfortable cabin. Additionally, a Sierra 1500 with the 5.3-liter V8 can tow more and gets better fuel economy than a V8-powered Ram 1500.

A Ford F-150 with the optional turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine can tow more than the Ram 1500, and it returns slightly better fuel economy than a V8-powered Ram 1500. Details: 2014 Ram 1500

The 2014 Ram 1500 comes in three cab configurations: Regular Cab models seat three, while Quad and Crew Cabs seat up to six. A 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard, while a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 and a 5.7-liter V8 are optional. Base and turbodiesel engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V8 comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the eight-speed automatic is optional. There are nine trim levels, ranging from the base Tradesman to the top Laramie Limited. The Ram 1500 received a number of updates for 2013 and was last redesigned for the 2009 model year. Since it receives only minor changes for 2014, this overview uses applicable research and reviews from model years 2009 through 2014.
