Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The 2009 9-3 does well in government and insurance industry crash tests, and is an IIHS "Top Safety Pick" for its good performance in front, side, and rear tests with standard electronic stability control.

Crash Tests

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2009 9-3 four out of a possible five stars for the driver and front passenger's protection in front impact tests, five stars for the driver's protection in side impact tests, and four out of a possible five stars for the rear passengers' protection in side impacts. The federal government also gives the 9-3 a four-star rollover rating.
  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2009 Saab 9-3 the highest rating, "Good," for frontal offset tests and a "Good" rating for side impact tests. The 9-3 was also chosen as a "Top Safety Pick" for good performance in front, side, and rear tests with electronic stability control. 

Safety Features

Electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and adaptive front and side air bags are standard for the 9-3. All 9-3s also include adaptive driver and front passenger air bags, head-curtain side air bags and torso side air bags. The steering column collapses upon impact. Front seats have active headrests, and all seats include adjustable headrests. The rear seats feature load shift protection in the rear seat back and lower child-seat anchoring points for the rear outer seats. The LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system is included.
