Saturn Ion Interior Review
Interior - 6.1 (Mediocre)
Despite some improvements over the past few years, many still compare its interior quality to toy-like plastics. Consumer Guide complains that all Ion models "suffer low-buck interior look and feel."
Seating
MSN says that there is "good room up front" in the 2007 Saturn Ion. The Red Line version features Recaro bucket seats, which the Detroit News found very uncomfortable: "I sure couldn't find a comfortable position for my oversize frame." On the other hand, New Car Test Drive says that "the Ion sedan is a good choice for tall drivers as it offers lots of headroom, a benefit of its high roofline."
Most reviewers find that seating is somewhat cramped in the rear. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram says that "the interior is roomy enough for five adults as long as the front seats aren't pushed all the way back." Consumer Guide agrees that space in the rear is limited: "Comfort [is] acceptable either way, though [there is] no excess of foot space."
Standard Features
Most reviewers have favorable comments on one new standard feature, which was formerly a costly option: GM's OnStar communications system. OnStar allows drivers to communicate with an operator who can provide them with directions, dispatch a tow truck in case of a breakdown, and even, through a regular phone, unlock the car's doors. New Car Test Drive says "it can be quite useful." However, OnStar requires a subscription after the first year of ownership.
The Ion 2 trim, which Edmunds calls "a stripper," or very basic car, includes little other than power locks and a CD/FM radio. The Ion 3 includes power windows and mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, a driver's-side seat-height adjuster, a CD/MP3 player and a keyless entry system.
The Ion uses a center-mounted console for the instrument gauges, which some reviewers take issue with. The Detroit News has the strongest opinion, stating that it "looks really cool but in practice is dangerous" because it forces the driver to take his or her eyes off the road.
Cargo
Reviewers agree that the Ion's trunk cargo space is a standout in the class. Both the coupe and sedan versions feature cargo space that is generous for the Ion's class, and Edmunds says it is "one of the largest trunks in the class at 14.7 cubic feet." Interior cargo space includes three bins in the instrument panel, compact-disc storage in the center console and map pockets in both the front and rear doors. The coupe version, however, offers 5 inches less of cubic space. The 2007 Saturn Ion Quad Coupe's rear seats and front passenger seats fold down, allowing owners to carry items up to 10 feet long.
