Saturn Ion Safety Review

Safety - 7.4 (Good)

While the 2007 Saturn Ion mostly receives mixed crash test ratings from the federal government and the insurance industry, it earns stellar ratings for driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes.

Accident Avoidance

Anti-lock brakes are optional on the Ion 2 and Ion 3 trims, and they are standard on the Red Line.

Crash Protection

The 2007 Saturn Ion comes standard with dual front air bags. Side-curtain air bags are optional. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) tests comparing small cars, the Saturn Ion ranks poorly.

While the 2007 Saturn Ion was awarded 5 out of 5 stars by the government's crash test ratings agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), for driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes (both sedan and coupe styles), its stellar safety ratings end there. The Ion sedan received only 3 out of 5 stars for front seat protection and 4 out of 5 starts for backseat protection in side impact crash tests. The Ion coupe earned 4 out of 5 stars for front and rear seat protection in side impact crash tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2007 Saturn Ion an overall rating of "acceptable," in frontal crash tests, but a rating of "poor" in side impact crashes, even in models with the optional side curtain airbags.
