Safety - What the Auto Press Says

Though the '09 SKY performs well in federal government crash tests -- earning four of five stars for front and side impacts, as well as a five-star rollover rating -- critics complain of hampered rearward visibility and a lack of necessary safety features.

  • "Double-hump rear deck hinders vision astern for shorter drivers, but top-up rear visibility is better than in most convertibles." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Another [concern] is that the outside mirrors are very small. Seeing anything coming up from the side is tough." -- Chicago Tribune
  • "The big safety disappointment is the absence of side-impact airbags.  ... While they aren't available in the more expensive S2000, they are now standard in the MX-5 and the Mini Cooper, where they are designed to provide head and torso protection. Side airbags have proven critical in occupant safety, and they're perhaps most needed in small, low-riding cars like the Sky." -- Cars.com
  • "The only airbags in the Sky are the two frontal bags that deploy in front crashes. There are no stationary or pop-up roll bars in the Sky, and the windshield pillars provide only "a degree of roll bar" protection during rollover crashes, according to a Saturn official who noted that "in the real world, roadsters are exempt from (government) roof crush standards." -- MSN
