Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The Scion xB does well in both federal government and insurance industry crash tests, and reviewers express confidence with the car's set of standard safety features.
Crash Tests
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2009 xB four stars out of a possible five for front-seat occupants' protection in front impact crashes, five stars for the driver's protection in side crashes, and five stars for rear passengers protection in side crashes. In addition the xB gets a four-star rollover rating.
- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the xB its highest possible rating, "Good," for frontal offset crashes. The most recent xB model has not been tested for side impacts. In 2006, the xB received a "Poor," the lowest possible rating, in side impact tests.
Safety Features
The 2009 Scion xB has an unusually good set of safety features for its price and size. Standard features include anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist for panic stops, traction control, and stability control. The xB also has driver and passenger frontal air bags, side air bags and head air bags for crash protection.
- "Scion continues to set the standard for this category with vehicle stability control. Just like panicked rear-seat occupants, it intervenes quickly during aggressive braking or when there's an active amount of hustle on the car, although there's an off switch if you'd rather take your chances." -- Edmunds
- "We were also thankful for the halogen high beams during two fast one-hour runs on a dark, winding and lonely freeway. But the flipside was that the projector low beams are treacherously weak. And for some reason there's only one backup light, on the driver's side. Is it a Scion styling thing, like one earring or something?" -- New Car Test Drive
