Used Car: 2010 Scion xD Review

Review Last Updated: 7/17/12

The 2010 Scion xD comes with a lot of standard features and has an above-average reliability rating, but if you need a lot of interior space, take a look at other 2010 small cars.

If you want a small car with a lot of standard features, the 2010 Scion xD is one of the best choices in the class. The xD comes standard with a Pioneer stereo that includes USB and auxiliary inputs. The Scion xD also has standard power windows and door locks, air conditioning, remote keyless entry and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. Navigation and an Alpine stereo, which has HD radio, were optional when it was new. It also has a number of standard safety features, including anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, brake assist and traction control. Safety ratings for the xD are about average for the class.

Though the xD is well-equipped, it doesn’t offer a lot of passenger or cargo space. Tall people may be cramped in the front seats, and some reviewers said they should avoid the rear row altogether. With rear-seat passengers, the xD doesn’t have much cargo space for a hatchback, but folding the back row expands that space considerably.

Test drivers said the xD’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine performs best in the city. It doesn’t have a lot of power for passing on the highway, but they said the xD’s precise steering makes it good at maneuvering in tight spaces. Its fuel economy ratings of 27/33 mpg city/highway are a little lower than ratings for class leaders.

The 2010 Scion xD isn’t the most spacious or fastest model in the class, but with more standard features than many of its classmates, this small hatchback should please shoppers who don’t want a car that skimps on amenities.

Other Cars to Consider

Unlike the Scion xD, the 2010 Volkswagen Golf is considered one of the most fun-to-drive models in the class, and has an impressive amount of passenger and cargo space. The Golf doesn’t have as many standard interior features as the xD, but it does have a lot of standard safety features and a better safety rating. The Golf has a lower reliability rating and isn’t as fuel-efficient as the xD. However, the Golf TDI, which has a diesel engine, gets some of the highest fuel economy ratings in the class.

The 2010 Mazda3 hatchback has sporty performance and more cargo space than the xD. The Mazda3 has a quality interior and comfortable front seats, but it has fewer standard safety and tech features than the xD. When it comes to safety scores, the Mazda3’s are above-average, but its reliability score is lower than the xD’s.
