Used Car: 2011 Scion xD Review

Review Last Updated: 7/22/12

The 2011 Scion xD’s hip exterior, long list of standard features and good handling make it a smart choice for shoppers who need a used small car. The Scion xD also has above-average safety and reliability scores.

The 2011 Scion xD has an impressive list of interior features, but if you need a 2011 small car with lots of interior space, you may prefer a larger hatchback. Standard on the 2011 Scion xD are power windows and door locks, air conditioning and steering wheel-mounted controls, as well as tech features like a Pioneer stereo with iPod/USB connectivity. If you want more technology, a fully-loaded xD can offer an upgraded stereo, navigation, Bluetooth and satellite radio.

Most test drivers said the Scion xD doesn’t have enough legroom up front, and the back seat is cramped. If you need a car that will seat four and hold lots of cargo at the same time, other hatchbacks may be better options. However, the xD has good cargo room when the rear seats are folded.

Auto critics said the xD has good handling and strong brakes, but thought that the standard 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine was best suited for city driving. The 2011 Scion xD’s fuel economy ratings of 27/33 mpg city/highway are about average for the class.

If safety and reliability are most important to you, the 2011 Scion xD is a practical choice. It offers a good list of safety features and the xD’s safety and reliability scores are above-average.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Honda Fit was named the U.S. News 2011 Best Hatchback for the Money, 2011 Best Hatchback for Families and 2011 Best Subcompact Car for the Money when it was new. In terms of value, the Honda Fit has a high reliability score, which means it might not be as expensive to maintain as other affordable small cars. The Fit also has a comfortable back seat and ample cargo space. The Fit performs better than the xD and offers slightly better fuel economy.

The 2011 Kia Soul is a good choice if you want a stylish small car with great safety scores but need more space inside. The Soul has a good list of standard interior features for the class though not as many as the Scion xD. Additionally, the Soul falls short of the xD with its lower reliability rating.
