2013 Scion xD Interior

Reviewers think the 2013 Scion xD’s cabin is well-made, but they say it’s constructed with hard plastics, just like many models in the class. The xD has a long list of standard features, which are easy to use, according to reviewers. Though well-equipped for the class, many competing hatchbacks offer more passenger space and cargo room than the xD does. Still, a few auto critics think the xD’s available space is good for its size.

  • "And though hard plastics are common at this price point, most of the xD's surfaces are low-gloss and deeply textured." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Generally roomy for the small exterior size." -- USA Today (2008)
  • "The interior is awash in budget-grade plastics but avoids looking overly cut-rate. Assembly quality is generally good." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

Seating

Most car reviewers say the driver and front passenger will find that the front seats of the Scion xD offer plenty of head- and legroom, but say that tall adults will be cramped due to a lack of leg space. While one reviewer thinks the second-row seats offer a lot of legroom for tall adults, most test drivers say the opposite. They think that even short adults will desire more leg space. The xD’s rear seats slide forward and back, but some reviewers say this feature doesn’t improve rear-seat space.

  • "The 2013 Scion xD's interior is most notable for its spaciousness rather than expressive design. The xD's tall ceiling nullifies headroom concerns, and the sliding and reclining rear seat serves up considerable legroom - even for passengers over six feet tall." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The seating position is very upright, and taller drivers might suffer from a shortage of legroom, not to mention a steering column that doesn't telescope. Headroom is generous, though, and rear passengers will enjoy ample space thanks to a reclining seatback and sliding seat bottom." -- Edmunds (2012)
  • "Limited legroom means even smaller passengers will be cramped. Fore and aft sliding seats seem more like a novelty than a benefit to passenger comfort." -- Consumer Guide (rear seats, 2012)

Interior Features

The 2013 xD comes in one well-equipped trim. Standard features include a Pioneer audio system, Bluetooth, HD Radio, a USB port and auxiliary input jack. A Pioneer premium audio system and satellite radio are optional. Several auto critics think that the xD’s radio and climate controls are very straightforward to use because the controls are big, accessible and easy to read. Few reviewers comment on the sound quality of the stereo systems, but one reviewer thinks the sound quality is good.

  • "The dash layout is plain and a bit drab, but the controls are large and easy to use." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Entertainment and climate controls are arrayed logically on the center stack and flow down to a nesting space for phones and iPods (with a USB/aux port close by)." -- Edmunds (2012)
  • "High-mounted audio and climate controls are easy to reach and decipher." -- Consumer Guide (2012)
  • "Controls feel pleasant -- smooth and high-quality -- to rotate, push, pull. Single instrument pod is in the conventional spot forward of the steering wheel, not atop the center of the dashboard." -- USA Today (2008)
  • "A strong-sounding Pioneer audio system with six speakers and iPod adapter and auxiliary input are standard." -- MSN (2008)

Cargo

The xD offers 10.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 35.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. Some test drivers are disappointed with the xD’s cargo space, saying that the available room pales in comparison with some of the xD’s classmates, such as the Kia Soul. Test drivers disagree over the usefulness of the xD’s interior storage. One reviewer says that there are a lot of storage places inside the cabin. A different reviewer says that although there are a lot of cubbies, some aren’t large enough.

  • "Despite its compact dimensions, the xD features a profusion of storage cubbies, boxes, trays and hidden compartments for your mobile life." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There are plenty of in-cabin slots and pockets, but some of them are too small to be really useful." -- Consumer Guide (2012)
  • "But relative to its competitors, the xD stiffs you on cargo space. Its 35.7 cubic feet falls short of the Honda Fit's 42 cubes (and nifty fold-flat floor), and the more than 50 cubes offered in the Nissan Cube and Kia Soul." -- Edmunds (2011)
