Reviewers praise the 2014 Subaru Forester for its roomy interior and exceptional cargo space, but how do they feel about the way it drives. Hi! I am Jim Sharifi, Senior Editor with US News Best Cars. In this video we will look at the Forester's performance. The 2014 Forester is available with two engines, the base Forester comes with a 170 horsepower 2.5L 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. A Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT is optional. The CVT comes standard on higher trims which feature a 250 horsepower turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is standard on all Foresters and a few critics note that the available X-Mode Traction Assist system makes it more capable off-road than many affordable compact SUVs. The Forester earns up to an EPA estimated 24 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway which is quite good for the class. Most test drivers agree that the base engine provides adequate power and that the CVT is responsive. However, some think the base Forester could use more power. Others say the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is definitely a step up, offering plenty of power and that its well matched to the CVT. Critics think that the redesigned Forrester offers impressive all-wheel-drive grip and a controlled ride through a few would like it to be more athletic. Still, others appreciate the Forester's precise steering and composed handling.
